76959: The Soul Winner The Soul Winner

By Charles Spurgeon / Christian Focus Publications

Evangelist par excellenceSpurgeon literally wrote the book on soul-winning. Distilling the Great Commission in this series of lectures, addresses and sermons he clearly and deftly conveys the length, depth and breadth of evangelism. He gives exacting definitions (so no ambiguity should remain) of, outlines qualifications and obstacles for, reveals the cost and reward of, and offers encouragement to those who should be about their “Father’s business”.Six college lectures begin the tour through what Spurgeon calls the “main pursuit of every true believer”, followed by four addresses given to Monday-evening prayer meetings for other preachers and teachers. Five instructive sermons follow, imparting such directives that will show the believer that “…he is wise who selects for his raw material immortal souls, whose existence shall outlast the stars.” In word and in deed, Spurgeon is a giant upon whose shoulders we should eagerly yet humbly aspire to stand.

USEFUL INSTRUCTIONS IN SOUL-WINNING Part 2

Scripture Reading: Jude

Text: (Jude 1:22-23Jude 1:22-23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

22 And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

) “And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.”  (KJV)

Being “discerning” means we must take the time to listen to people to discern their needs and how we should deal with them. I do not mean now that the gospel ever changes, but the way we approach people, according to Scripture, is according to their own needs and background. Proverbs 18:13Proverbs 18:13
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

13 He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. answereth...: Heb. returneth a word

WP-Bible plugin
“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it; it is folly and shame to him.” Proverbs 15:28Proverbs 15:28
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

28 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things.

WP-Bible plugin
“The heart of the righteous studieth to answer…”

(2) Be pitiful -

Jude said, “Of some having compassion.” The word literally means “pity”. Some people just need some compassion. Psalm 26:5,6Psalm 26:5,6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked. 6 I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD:

WP-Bible plugin
“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth…” Do you see the emphasis on compassion in those verses? So what type of people need compassion?

(A) The ignorant need compassion for Hebrews 5:2Hebrews 5:2
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. can...: or, can reasonably bear with

WP-Bible plugin
says, “Who can have compassion on the ignorant?” Some people have been duped, their minds are confused because the god of this world hath blinded their minds! You don’t jump on people who are ignorant! If a person knows the gospel and deliberately rejects it, he needs solemn rebuke; but not those who are ignorant of the truth!

(B) The fainthearted need compassion. In Matthew 9:37Matthew 9:37
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

WP-Bible plugin
“Jesus was moved with compassion on them because they were faint” which speaks of their faintheartedness. This speaks of people easily discouraged. Perhaps they have wanted to be saved but never fully understood and embraced Christ and are discouraged. We should be very tender and compassionate with these people.

(C) People who are bound by their sins like the Gadarene demoniac. Jesus told him to go home and tell his friends what the Lord had done for him and how he had compassion on him. Some people really do desire to be saved from their sins, they simply need someone to care long enough to help them come to the Savior!

(D) The bereaved need compassion. When the Lord came across the bier of the widow of  Nain’s son, the Bible says, “He had compassion on her and said unto her…” I have led many people to Christ after a funeral. The person I bury may be lost, but if I have compassion on the family, I can likely win some! It is compassion that causes the soulwinner to stop and help someone in need, to go the extra mile, to keep going back. There is a man in our church who was led to Christ by a bus captain that kept going back and back, every Saturday. That is the compassion that makes the difference!

(3) Be pungent -

“others save with fear pulling them out of the fire” – “Others” means here is another case. These kind are to be saved with fear, they do not need compassion, they need to have the fear of God placed in them. The term “pulling them out of the fire” probably refers to the story of Lot and how the angels had to lay hold on them and literally pull them out of Sodom! Some people live so close to hell that it takes severe warnings and rebukes to touch them at all. Old Oliver Greene used to pray, “Lord, save that one nearest hell.” Who is this crowd?

(A) The religious self righteous crowd- Jesus had compassion on the multitudes and the publicans and sinners, but He had nothing but rebukes and fiery indignation to the Pharisees and scribes!

(B) Those caught up in cults and false doctrine who have turned from the way of truth but have not gone so far as to be given up. A stiff warning may help someone like that.

25965: Teach Me to Pray Teach Me to Pray

By Andrew Murray / Bethany House

Contemporary Christians know that God answers prayer and that praying is important, but most also wish their prayer life could be more effective. Murray instructs readers from Scripture and the life of Jesus that prayer is the root and strength of all work for God, that God intends to answer every prayer, and that prayer is meant to be a way of life. These thirty-one classic meditations, written in 1885, have been edited and clarified for new readers. 240 pages, softcover from Bethany.

SOULWINNING POWER

Scripture Reading: Acts 2:1-4Acts 2:1-4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

2 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

In Acts 2 the entire 120 in the upper room were waiting on God in prayer for “the promise of the Father.”(Luke 24:49Luke 24:49
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

) When the day of Pentecost was come, the Scripture tells us they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they left that place to preach with boldness and win 3000 souls to Christ. Later in Acts 4 it happened again that “they prayed…and were all filled with the Holy Ghost and they spake the Word of God with boldness.” The church grew by leaps and bounds because the people were filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly used God’s Word with power to win people to Christ. Later, Paul commanded everybody in the churches to “be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Great soulwinners have always been men and women who believed in the power and unction of the Holy Spirit. There are those who say that the filling of the Holy Spirit is just being yielded to do what He says. But the Scripture teaches plainly that we are to plead and cry for the Holy Spirit’s fullness so that we can win souls. In Luke 11 Jesus tells the story of the importunate man going to his friend at midnight because someone has come to him in need of food. Jesus says that the man would not rise and give him bread because he was his friend, but because he kept pleading, he got up and gave him what he needed. Then Jesus said, “If ye then being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?” Did you notice that He said we must ask Him for the Holy Spirit?.

My first church was in a little town called Emden, Missouri. It was just a crossroads with a population of 61! The nearest town was 10 miles away and it only had 1000 people. It was a farming community and houses were far apart. When God led me there I was 24 and new at pastoring and I made a whole lot of mistakes. But I had read Dr. Rice’s book on the Power of Pentecost and His book on soulwinning which taught that winning souls was a matter of having God’s power and that in order to have His power, you must pray and plead for it. So, I would go out behind the church on Saturday nights, look up into the sky and beg God to fill me with His Holy Spirit. Many, many nights found me walking back and forth across the pasture quoting Isaiah 44:3Isaiah 44:3
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

WP-Bible plugin
“I will pour water on him who is thirsty and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit upon thy seed and my blessing on thine offspring.” I was young, a little brash in my preaching, but oh, how God blessed that year that I was there with over 70 public professions of faith and many  baptisms.

Maybe the reason we do not win souls much is that we don’t do what Jesus said about praying and begging God for His power! The fullness of the Holy Spirit is given us primarily to win souls and we must have an earnest, heartfelt desire to do it in order for God to fill us! In fact, Acts 5:32Acts 5:32
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

WP-Bible plugin
says that He only gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him. Why should He fill you if you are not willing to obey Him, first by continually begging Him for that fullness and then by witnessing to those around you?

Questions to Ponder

1. Do you have seasons of prayer where you ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit to help you win souls?

2. Do you have regular times to go soulwinning? No one is a consistent soulwinner who does not go soulwinning consistently.”
