David’s New Beginning

When a Christian sins, what must take place to make things right! This outline helps us see how this played out in King David’s life as well as how it applies to us today!

Title: “David’s New Beginning!”

Text: Psalm 51

Introduction:

•    We have in these verses a record of a psalm that David wrote after Nathan the prophet came a made David deal with his sin!
•    There are steps listed in this psalm, which illustrate how a sinning saint comes back into fellowship with God!
•    All of us have sinned, and no one likes to deal with it, however it is great when one can get clean!
•    These steps are not complicated most of the time we do not consciously do them! Often we do these by leadership of the Holy Spirit!
•    These notes came from Scolfield Reference Bible page # 623

Proposition: There are seven steps a person must take in order to get back in fellowship with God according to the Psalm!

I.    The Sin Must Be Dealt With!

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” (Psalms 51:1-6 KJV)

A.    We must admit we have sinned against God (verse 4)

B.    We cannot continue as we once had! We have to face God on the matter! He will not shed more light until we deal with the issues at hand!

Proverbs 28:13 ¶ “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

C.    We essentially agree with God on the matter! He doesn’t change His mind on sin! Sin is sin!

D.    The Bible is the best place to come to the agreement!

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:22-25 KJV)

II.    Forgiveness And Cleansing Through Blood Of Christ!

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” (Psalms 51:7 KJV)

A.    Hyssop – was a shrub that was used to apply the blood and water in the purification process.

B.    The basis for our cleansing was the precious blood of Christ.

1Peter 1:18-19 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:”
Hebrews 9:22 “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

C.    We do not depend upon an animal’s blood for forgiveness!

D.    Any person can rest upon this great truth!

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”

III.    Cleansing!

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalms 51:7-10 KJV)

A.    Cleansing is what man needs more than anything else!

Leviticus 16:30 “For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.”
Psalm 19:12 “Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.”
Psalm 119:9 ¶ BETH. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”
Jeremiah 33:8 “And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.”
2 Corinthians 7:1 ¶ “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
Ephesians 5:26 “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”
James 4:8 “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.”
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

B.    This is the desire of the repentant sinner and the repentant saint!

C.    What a blessing to know that our sins are taken care of!

D.    Cleansing cannot be bought; it is simply appropriated through Christ!

IV.    Spirit Filled Again!

“Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.” (Psalms 51:11-12 KJV)

A.    David prayed that the Spirit would not be taken from him, however, we do not pray this, for He indwells us!

B.    David was not speaking of being lost and saved again!

C.    When one is not Spirit filled, then they are not happy!

D.    The guilt of our sin is minimal when we are Filled!

Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

V.    Service Can Be Enjoined Again!

“Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.” (Psalms 51:13 KJV)

A.    David argued that once his great sins were forgiven and cleansed, he could again be involved in service of the Great King!

B.    Often when one has been involved in a particular sin, and they have overcome it and have had cleansing, then they can help keep others out of the same trap!

C.    You cannot adequately serve the Lord without being right with the Heavenly Father!

Hebrews 12:1 ¶ “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”

D.    David was quick to tell Nathan what to do for the man in the illustration, but when he dealt with his mistakes then he was able to help many more in a more enlightened way!

VI.    Worship Is Enjoyed!

“Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” (Psalms 51:14-17 KJV)

A.    Renewed worship is a natural byproduct of cleansing!

B.    David was thrilled to have his sin dealt with!

C.    Sin always cuts off true worship!

D.    This was illustrated in the church at Corinth! There was much division and dissention because people stopped worshipping Christ!

VII.    Restored To Fellowship!

“Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.” (Psalms 51:18-19 KJV)

A.    Explain the difference between relationship and fellowship!

B.    David was restored! His thoughts and desires were in line with God’s ways! He wanted Blessing upon Zion!

C.    It is wonderful to be restored again to sweet communion with our Lord!

1 Corinthians 1:9 “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”
2 Corinthians 6:14 “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”
Ephesians 5:11 “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.”
1 John 1:3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
1 John 1:6 “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:”
1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”

D.    It is best to deal swiftly with our sin so we can maintain our fellowship!!!

Conclusion:

To the Sinner:
•    Be saved before it is too late!

To the Christian:
•    Keep a short account!
•    Guard this sweet fellowship with everything you have in you!
