There Is A Famine Of Old Fashioned Pastors

Make no mistake about it, there is a famine of “old fashioned” pastors. Even with casual observance, it does not take long to surmise the devastating impact this has made upon our society as a whole and our world in general. I suppose the term “old fashioned” is relative to what one deems as “old fashioned” by their heritage and experience. If we use the objective Word of God as the standard, then we can certainly expound what “old fashioned” was, is and what it should be forth going. This post seeks to prod your thinking about this important issue. Borrowing a common phrase of our sitting President, Mr. Obama, “Let’s be clear”, every pastor should seek to be “OLD FASHIONED“!

Take A Look Around You

Wherever you hang your hat you will find compromising pastors. They may walk with God, and be moral people, but when it comes to preaching it straight, they take the long way around the barn. To “tip toe through the tulips” with God’s Word is to compromise. Many stick their finger to the wind to find out which way the wind is blowing, as it were, in order to know what to preach. Face it, two thirds of the time a pastor’s message is going to be considered negative according to the flesh. (Jeremiah 1:10 & 2 Timothy 4:2)

(2 Timothy 2:15) “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  (KJV)

Paul said to “rightly divide” the Word. That phrase means to cut straight. When you cut it straight, you will offend people; not that that is what we want to do. Pastors who rightly divide God’s Holy Word will feed the sheep and have God’s blessing. They may not have the high attendance, and huge offerings that other churches have, but they will be a New Testament church.

Christians Are Constantly Moving The Proverbial Landmarks

(Proverbs 22:28) “Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”  (KJV)

Man is always trying to improve on what God has said, done or provided. No matter what is spelled out in Scripture, people will seek to do it their own way. In the modern era, we have seen many pastors move the boundaries in many aspects of ministry. One example is this new “seeker sensitive” and “purpose driven” philosophical dogma. It is counterproductive and most do not see this. Paul said to preach the Word. (2 Timothy 4:2) “Old fashioned” pastors do this very thing! Think about it… why should we bow down to every new whim that some author comes up with?

Many pastors would never claim to be a gnostic in their statement of faith, but they sure operate under it’s influence while they seek to promote “their new way of doing things” (i.e. Higher knowledge). When we exalt man and his ideology, we undermine the foundation on which we historically lay. With each generation of pastors that comes along under the influence of men who have moved the markers we get further away from “old fashioned” preaching and ministry.

Are You Ashamed To Be Called “Old Fashioned”?

(Romans 1:16) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”  (KJV)

Many pastors want folks to think that they are educated and refined. Seeking to fit into the politically correct mold of the modern day mainstream church, pastors have drunk the “kool-aid” of liberalism. They have sought to distance themselves from so-called “old fashioned” pastors. They think these godly people are ignorant and beneath them. The mannerisms, style of preaching, clothing, and age of many “old fashioned” pastors is looked upon with disdain.

If you are a pastor who is tired of fitting into some sort of man-made mold, then “MAN UP“, as they say! Throw off the modernistic philosophy and stick with God’s Word. You may not be liked by everybody, but they will respect you. People know a phony when they see it. Be real and be “old fashioned” according to the BIBLE!

Conclusion

The world does not need another form of counterfeit religiosity. It needs the truth! “‘Thus sayeth the LORD” will get the job done. To be an “old fashioned” pastor does not mean you have to be uneducated and  ignorant, nor does it mean you have to use improper grammar and preach like your pants are on fire. It does mean that you are passionate about the Word of God and you give 1,000% when you minister for the Lord! It means that you are seeking to please God and not man! “Old fashioned” pastors do not care what the world thinks and they do not concern themselves with being politically correct. One thing matters… GOD’S APPROVAL!

06283: Matthew Poole"s Commentary, 3 Volumes Matthew Poole’s Commentary, 3 VolumesBy Matthew Poole / Hendrickson Publishers

Perhaps the only true rival to Matthew Henry! Charles Spurgeon said: “If I must have only one commentary, and had read Matthew Henry as I have, I do not know but what I should choose Poole. He is a very prudent and judicious commentator . . . not so pithy and witty by far as Matthew Henry, but he is perhaps more accurate, less a commentator, and more an expositor.” 3104 pages total, three hardcovers from Hendrickson.

Pastoral Challenge For The New Year!

Pastor, as you well know, this year could be the last year that you or I may be able to minister for Jesus Christ. Satan has leveled his gun and drawn a bead on our ministries and testimonies. Not one of us is exempt from spiritual warfare and there are many dangers which await us in the next 52 weeks. Are you preparing for this battle? I hope so!

Challenge…

On behalf of those of us here at The Working Pastor, I want to challenge you to be FAITHFUL to our Lord! Success, contrary to popular opinion, is not measured by numbers, pats on the back, how many book sales you have or how big your ministries are! Success is found by being FAITHFUL to our Lord in everything we endeavor to do.

The measure of our FAITHFULNESS can be seen in our motives and methods. If our motive or methods are not found to be righteous and according to God’s Word, then we will suffer loss. FAITHFULNESS, though not mentioned by name in the following verses, is definitely a key factor in the determination of reward or loss at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Consider the follow verses…

(2 Corinthians 5:9-10) “Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”  (KJV) Emphasis mine – Literally “Approved or disapproved”

(1 Corinthians 3:10-15) “According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”  (KJV)

FAITHFULNESS, in my humble opinion, is the primary issue at the Judgment Seat. FAITHFULNESS or loyalty to Christ will enable us to bring forth fruit that will remain, and will keep us on the path that will help us build with the proper materials which will endure the test of fire. Make no mistake about this, our FAITHFULNESS to God will be revealed! My pastor put it this way… “You may not be much but you can be FAITHFUL!”

“You may not be much, but you CAN be faithful!” Dr. Bobby Roberson – Pastor of Gospel Light Baptist Church of Walkertown, North Carolina

Are You Up To The Challenge?

The Scriptures are full of examples of those who were FAITHFUL in the midst of dire circumstances. Joseph, Daniel, and Moses are just a few. No matter what you are facing today, or will face tomorrow, you CAN be FAITHFUL to Christ! Are you up to the challenge?

5 Tips To Better Church Bulletins

The weekly church bulletin makes an initial impression on each person who attends the worship service. It can even set the tone; especially with visitors. How you present yourself by way of those few sheets of paper can mean all the difference in reaching a soul. Make no mistake about this!

Listed below are 5 simple tips to better bulletins. The list could be longer and be sure… I am no expert in this area. However, I mention these things as they have been learned through experience.

Tip #1 – Every Church Bulletin Should Be Informative

This is one of the most effective communication devises for any church staff! Inform the membership and guests of what is going on. Invite people to look at it when going over the announcements. Typically, these bulletins or programs will lay around a week or so in people’s homes. So be sure to inform people with good info!

Below are some good ingredients for informative content:

  1. Weekly Pastoral Greeting
  2. Order Of Service – At least the songs and pages numbers
  3. Upcoming Events This Week
  4. Future Events – Rest of month
  5. MAJOR Prayer Requests
  6. “Opportunities To Serve” is always helpful
  7. Attendance from previous week and offerings
  8. Hospital List
  9. Shut-in of the week/month
  10. Missionary of the week/month
  11. Serviceman of the week/month
  12. Place for sermon notes
  13. Quotes, and theme verses
  14. Clearly seen contact info – For Church, Pastor, Staff, including phone numbers and email addresses
  15. Website Info

There is much more you could add, but this gives you an idea. It is great to get bulletins from several different congregations to see what people are doing. I get these from funerals, and solicit from friends and family. (KEEP THESE EXAMPLES IN A FILE)

Tip #2 – Every Church Bulletin Should Be Grammatically Correct And Be Proofed For Spelling Errors

This is one of my pet issues. Nobody is perfect and I am not the best with grammar, but there is no reason why bulletins cannot be filled with content that is easy to understand and SPELLED CORRECTLY! Remember, you are MAKING a VALUABLE IMPRESSION upon all who read your bulletins. Yes, there will be mistakes made, but they should be kept to a bare minimum.

Tip #3 – Every Church Bulletin Should Be Simple In Design

The internet is full of websites where one can get fabulous pictures, pre-made blanks, clipart and much more. No matter what you decide on using remember the K.I.S.S. principle… “Keep It Simple Stupid”. I could provide some links, but I feel it is unnecessary. It would be just as easy for one to do a quick Google Search for church bulletin(s).

Many of the ladies of the church have software programs in their personal computers which can be utilized to produce a bulletin. The “guts” part of your bulletin can be designed in Microsoft Word and printed upon pre-made blanks. Or you can design the whole thing in any card/label designing software program. (Hallmark being just one example)

Whether capitalizing upon pre-made blanks or using color printers, be sure to have lots of color in the bulletin. There is really no need in using plain black and white unless that is all you can use. Color really helps things so use it!

Tip #4 – Every Church Bulletin Should Be Updated With New “Stuff” From Time To Time

Every now and then it is entirely appropriate to have new “stuff”. You might want to have a recipe added, or a member of the month. The point is to mix it up a little. “Variety is the spice of life” or so they say. Keep the bulletin fresh and exciting. New formatting or seasonal flair is always a good idea.

Tip #5 – Every Church Bulletin Should Have Inserts

It is my opinion that inserts add a third dimension to the typical bulletin. When I have received bulletins that had inserts, I always felt like there was a lot going on. They are an easy way to include last minute items that missed the initial weekly deadline. They are best used as advertisements for revivals, wedding or new baby announcements, but also as ministry promotions. I have used an insert as my Radio Ministry Promo. I placed the listen times, and station call letters right on the insert. Really… the sky is the limit!

Conclusion…

The bottom line is that a good, people oriented ministry will take advantage of church bulletins. Like all other tools, it can be drab and lethargic. It doesn’t have to be that way, so don’t let it! Using a church bulletin can add so much to your people’s perception of your leadership as pastor. By all means take advantage of it! Put you heart and soul in producing a good church bulletin and people will take notice.
